Behind Closed Doors:  An Insight into the Creative Director and Founder of The Make Up Artists Academy – Georgina Toulis

Georgina, what got you started in this career?

I started out as a Fashion Designer, graduating from East Sydney Technical College, but it didn’t take me long to realise my passion lay elsewhere. I loved make-up, I loved the way you could transform yourself and others, I loved the creativity. Once I started my diploma in Makeup artistry I knew I had found my true passion.

Since becoming a Professional Makeup Artist, what have been some of your favourite events or models you’ve worked with?

I have been fortunate enough to work on some amazing events in my career, and note Mercedes Fashion Week as a highlight, as it combined my first love of fashion with my artistry in Makeup. I’ve also worked on a lot of photoshoots. Photoshoots are great fun, you get to work with a great collaboration of professionals all producing their art, whether it’s photography, hair or makeup. It’s a really great team feeling.

The other thing that stands out for me, are the awards shows. There is always such a great nervous excitement in the make-up room before a big awards event. I’ve been fortunate enough to work on MTV Awards, Logie Awards, Urban Music Awards, Nickelodeon Awards and recently at the AACTA Awards.

What do you love about being a Make-up Artist?

I love the freedom to create art with makeup. I love seeing clients radiate happiness and confidence once I have completed their look.

There’s nothing better than knowing you’ve impacted a person, helped them to build their confidence, and made them feel beautiful in the process.

Why did you decide to open The Makeup Artist Academy?

I’ve had a great career as a professional makeup artist, and I felt it was time to share what I’d learnt and help others to achieve the same success and reward that I’ve had throughout my career.

I love people, I love makeup and I love teaching the little tricks and techniques that I have learnt along the way, so I decided to open up the Academy. I have been teaching makeup students for many years now for other big brands like Napoleon and Mac. It was time for me to get my own space and create my own brand. That’s how The Makeup Artist Academy came about.

What can people expect when they work with The Makeup Artist Academy?

They can expect an in-depth overview of the industry. A very hands on, practical experience across the duration of the course, where they will learn current looks and trends along with specific techniques allowing them to establish a portfolio, and feel confident to start freelance work straight away.

We work very closely with our students to ensure they perfect their skills in application and technique. All classes are kept to a maximum of 8 students, so each student receives the attention and guidance they require. The Makeup Artist Academy is a relaxed and fun environment to learn the craft of makeup artistry.

Who are your courses designed for?

Anyone! Our courses are for anyone who wants to learn the craft. Different courses offer different outcomes.

The professional 8-week courses can be particularly helpful for hairdressers or beauty therapists who are wanting to up-skill and broaden their service offering. Or maybe they want a career change?

Our one-on-one private makeup lessons or Teen Makeup lessons are great for individuals who want to learn a certain look, or lack confidence in doing their makeup for a Saturday night out. The Makeup artists Academy really does have something for everyone.

Why should people choose The Makeup Artist Academy?

At The Makeup Artist Academy, we really love what we do. That passion for what we do shows in our lessons and it shows in our students upon completion of their course.

We offer a really friendly, relaxed atmosphere whilst we are focused on our students obtaining the skills and experience they require to reach their goals. We want our students to leave The Academy feeling confident in their skills and wanting to come back and learn another new skill – Like Spray Tanning!!
